You’ve come to the right place if you’re looking for an easy and delicious chocolate avocado mousse! It’s silky, smooth and you cannot taste the avocado! I made this several times and no one could guess that avocado was the main ingredient. It tastes so good that it’s amazing to eat on its own or elevate your chia pudding!
Why use an avocado for this dessert?
Avocados:
- creamy texture
- it doesn’t have an overwhelming flavor profile
- healthy
I’ve made this several times and years later, a friend that I made it for, still raves about the chia pudding I made with for her that was topped with this mousse.
It’s:
- not overwhelmingly sweet
- keeps you satiated for a long time
- creamy
- tastes JUST like a chocolate mousse
How to pick the perfect avocado?
I think when you’re generally picking avocados for some time you get a sense of what is going to turn out. I’m lucky that I have a store nearby that has flawless ones every time.
Here are some tips:
- Try to pick larger ones: I find generally the bigger they are the better sense you have to whether they’re hard or ripe or overripe.
- Pick a few: If I need just one, I generally try to get two. One that’s ready today and one that’s ready in a few days. If you can afford the space or one more avocado, I’d pick one that’s hard and can ripen on the counter after a couple of days. Be warned, sometimes it doesn’t take long for it to ripen! They can be quick!
- Firmness: This may be a given, but if you hold it with your entire hand and give it a gentle squeeze, you should be able to see if it feels soft but firm to the squeeze. If it doesn’t squeeze at all, it’s not ready, And if it’s super soft it’s too ripe.

What you’ll need for this recipe?
Simplicity is key in this recipe and only a few ingredients are needed to make your base mousse. Additional ingredients can be added, if desired.
- Avocado: I picked a large ripe avocado. I got them in advance and let them ripen in my fridge. You can pick 3 small ones if a large one is not found.
- good quality unsweetened cocoa powder: I use this dutch processed one from Costco or from Amazon
- maple syrup: I don’t have a substitute as I’m not sure anything would taste like maple syrup
- a pinch of sea salt
How to create this avocado mousse
I used an immersion blender to avoid using bigger equipment. I’m sure a food processor would work. I also didn’t think it would be enough for a blender or a food processor and blend properly using a food processor or blender.
Put everything in a medium bowl. I used the immersion blender for about 1 minute until it was smooth, and creamy!
I put used a spatula and scooped it into a bowl. I placed it into a fridge for about 30 minutes to set.
Other flavor variations to add to the mousse
You can add some powders to change the taste of your mousse such as:
- coffee/expresso powder
- vanilla powder
- cinnamon powder
- orange zest/essence
- edible rose petals/rose essence
What about topping your mousse?
There’s many ways you can fancy up your mousse cups such as:
- sifted cocoa powder
- frozen small berries like wild blueberries and red currants
- shredded coconut shavings
- dark chocolate shavings
- dairy-free coconut whipped cream
- mini chocolate-chips
What can you do with your extra mousse?
Here are some ideas you can do with your extra mousse:
- little chocolate frozen discs
- chocolate bars like fudgsicles
- use it for tiramisu
- use it as frosting on a cake!
Storing your mousse
I’m sure your mousse wouldn’t last more than a day but just in case you need to make it ahead of time, just cover it with a plastic wrap and seal it with the lid and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Freezing
I haven’t personally done this, but I think it would be such a great one! In ice cube traps you could freeze your mousse in its individual slots. This way, if you’re craving something sweet you can pop one out of the tray and enjoy like a piece of chocolate!
Tips on storing avocados in general
I think the best way to store is in your tummy! But in all seriousness, you’re bound to have leftovers. I place it in a seal proof container in the bridge. I just make sure the seal is tight and no air can go in. It’s the oxidation of this fruit that turns it from green to brown that makes it go browner faster.
