Avocado is one of those staple ingredients you need at home. It’s the canvas you need to create an artwork of tastes in your mouth. This guacamole is one of those art works you can make from a simple avocado (or two!). I hope you try it and add it to your favorite recipes to make!

What’s so great about an avocado anyways?
I actually didn’t really appreciate this fruit (yes! It’s a fruit!) until much much later in my life after I had kids. I didn’t know what I was missing out on in life!
How to pick the perfect avocado?
I think when you’re generally picking avocados for some time you get a sense of what is going to turn out. I’m lucky that I have a store nearby that has flawless ones every time.
Here are some tips:
- Try to pick larger ones: I find generally the bigger they are the better sense you have to whether they’re hard or ripe or over ripe.
- Pick a few: If I need just one avocado, I generally try to get two. One that’s ready today and one that’s ready in a few days. If you can afford the space or one more avocado, I’d pick one that’s hard and can ripen on the counter after a couple of days. Be warned, sometimes it doesn’t take long for an avocado to ripen! They can be quick!
- Firmness: This may be a given, but if you hold it with your entire hand and give it a gentle squeeze, you should be able to see if it feels soft but firm to the squeeze. If it doesn’t squeeze at all, it’s not ready, And if it’s super soft it’s too ripe.

Nutritional Benefits
There are so many to list but I love eating it because it gives me a sense of being full for longer. It also has so many minerals and nutrients to list so please take a look here!

Okay, so now what do I do with it?
So, obviously you’re here on my guac recipe so the first thing you could do is that!
But there are so many other ideas to make with it:
- avocado mousse: I’ll never forget the day I made a chia pudding with avocado mousse on top for someone. Years later, she’s still talking about how good it was!
- toast: Sourdough bread and avocado are those best friends you never knew about! Mash it up with lemon, salt, and tomato slices on a piece of toast! So good!
- Salad: I suppose this is an obvious!
- Sandwiches: Cut up some slices and pair it with a yummy sandwich!
- Boats: Eat it right out of the shell by spooning your salad, rice, beans – the sky’s the limit!
- Soup: not all soups would work! But a chili soup would be perfect to have some slices of avocado in it!

What is in guacamole?
Guacamole is originally made in Mexico. I am not Mexican myself.
It may seem that guacamole is just smashed avocado it’s definitely more than that! Let’s explore what goes into this recipe below:
The ingredients
The rest of the ingredients compliment the avocado so well and bring it to life!

- Jalapeno slice: gives it a little bit of a kick! I choose the pickled one from a jar found in the grocery store.
- Fresh lime juice: I wouldn’t substitute this for bottled lime! It’s not the same!
- Cumin: this is also a must!
- fresh garlic paste: I love a good garlicky dip!
- cilantro leaves: gives the dip that missing piece of flavor!
- salt: I used pink salt.
- onion powder: also gives a more coherent taste to the guac.
- veg bouillon powder: not necessary but I like using it to give the guac a more robust taste.
How to make it
I place all the ingredients in a medium bowl and use an immersion blender to blend until blended but still chunky.

How to eat it
Guacamole is such a versatile dip! My favourite way is to scoop it with a crunchy tortilla chip! Some other great way to enjoy it are:

- On toast as a breakfast or lunch
- In a sandwich as a spread
- Topped on nachos

Flavor variations
I wouldn’t change too much with the recipe but I’ve seen some put chopped tomatoes and diced onions to make it more like a chunky green salsa. If you end up putting cheese or sour cream I feel like it takes away from the taste of the avocado.
You could add more spice/heat by adding red chili flakes or paprika.
I’d love to hear what you decide to add to this recipe!

Tips on storing
I think the best way to store is in your tummy! But in all seriousness, you’re bound to have leftovers. I think with the lime juice inside, you’re safe from your guacamole going bad in less than three days. I place it in a seal proof container in the bridge. I just make sure the seal is tight and no air can go in. It’s the oxidation of avocado that turns it from green to brown that makes it go browner faster.
However, this website has a fantastic way to store your guac that I never heard of before!
